Solo Episode- 7 years alcohol-free
My own story — the hangovers from hell and what finally changed.
A guide from Olivia
If you've ever typed 'am I drinking too much?' into Google late at night, this page is for you. I spent years there myself. I could give up alcohol for months but as soon as I had one, I was rarely able to stop at one. Let me explain the 'grey area' that billions of people sit in with alcohol, but rarely talk about.
The simple definition
Drinks occasionally, rarely thinks about it, never bargains with themselves, can take a drink or leave it, no pull either way. Is at peace with their relationship with alcohol.
Where most of my clients are
Functioning and capable, but thinking about alcohol, negotiating with it and regretting it far more often than not. Not at peace with their relationship with alcohol. Can rarely stop at one drink.
Physically dependant, organising their life around alcohol. Alcohol has a huge negative impact on their lives and is very problematic in terms of relationships, work etc. The picture most of us have of a 'problem'.
Grey area drinking is the space between take it or leave it drinking and extreme alcohol misuse. If alcohol takes up more space in your head, your evenings and your mornings than you want it to, you're in the grey area, even if nobody else would ever guess.

How it feels
That constant negotiation is exhausting. And because you're 'fine' on paper, it can be lonely too. Nobody can quite grasp how you feel, they keep telling you you're fine, that you're over reacting, but you can't shake the feeling that something's got to give. You keep thinking surely, there has to be more to life than this
Signs to notice
Private, free and you'll know exactly where you stand.
WHY CUTTING DOWN DOESN'T WORK FOR US
Alcohol is an addictive substance, sold to us as relaxation, reward and fun. Every glass nudges your brain to want the next one. So when you try to 'just be good this week', you're fighting biology and decades of conditioning with nothing but a vague goal and grit.
That's why moderation feels so hard. The answer isn't trying harder to make moderation finally click, it's understanding what alcohol is really doing for you and finding something better to do that job.
The good news? You don't have to hit rock bottom to decide you've had enough.
